These larger, ball-shaped M&M’s feature a crunchy pretzel center, dipped in chocolate, and then coated in the traditional candy shell colors like Red, Orange, Yellow, Brown, Blue, and Green. We particularly love them for their distinctive shape and the satisfying crunch of the pretzel, which makes them a must-have mix-in for treats like our Sweet and Salty Popcorn. Tiny Treats, Big Impact: M&M’s Minis

M&M Minis offer all the deliciousness of regular M&M’s but in a more compact size, making them incredibly versatile for various dessert applications. Their diminutive stature makes them especially good for baking directly into cookies, where they distribute evenly and provide delightful bursts of chocolate and crunch in every bite. They are also a fun and precise option for decorating smaller items like pretzel bites. While traditionally available in classic shades, Mars has recently introduced “Christmas Baking Bits” – bags of Red and Green M&M’s Minis, conveniently found in the baking aisle. This innovation has been a game-changer for our holiday baking, eliminating the need to sort through countless bags. Discover how we utilize M&M Minis in these Two Sisters treats:

The Lifespan of Your M&M’s: Storage Tips for Vibrant Treats

Collage image showing new M&M's vs. old M&M's.

For those of us who love to stock up on M&M’s for future baking projects, understanding their shelf life is crucial. We’ve found that an unopened bag of M&M’s can maintain its quality for at least one, and often up to two, years when stored correctly in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. However, after approximately two years, you might notice a subtle yet significant change: the M&M’s tend to lose their signature sheen and vibrant color. The image above clearly illustrates this difference between fresh and older brown M&M’s. While the “old” M&M’s may still taste perfectly fine, their dull, speckled appearance makes them less appealing for decorative purposes. For the best visual results, especially when decorating, we recommend using M&M’s that are within their peak freshness to ensure they add that coveted pop of color and glossy finish to your desserts.

Navigating the Heat: Baking with M&M’s

A common observation when baking with M&M’s is that they often develop small cracks. It’s important to clarify that these cracks typically don’t occur during the actual baking process while they’re in the oven. Instead, they usually appear as your delicious dessert cools down after being removed from the heat. Despite numerous attempts and various techniques, we haven’t found a definitive way to entirely prevent or significantly limit this cracking phenomenon. It’s a bit of a baking mystery, but ultimately, it’s a minor aesthetic detail. Even with a few slightly cracked M&M’s, your cookies and other baked goods will still look incredibly appetizing and charmingly homemade. We believe that perfection isn’t always necessary for deliciousness! However, if you’ve discovered a secret method to keep M&M’s perfectly intact during the cooling process, please do us a huge favor and share your tips in the comments below – we’d be incredibly grateful for your wisdom! 😊

The Chilling Truth: M&M’s and Refrigeration

Here’s a crucial tip for anyone decorating with M&M’s: avoid making your M&M-adorned desserts too far in advance if they require refrigeration or freezing. The moisture present in both refrigerators and freezers has an unfortunate effect on M&M’s: it causes them to lose their vibrant sheen, resulting in a dull, cloudy appearance. We learned this lesson the hard way, as vividly demonstrated in the picture above of our Mickey Mouse Cupcakes. We meticulously decorated them the night before a birthday party, only to find cloudy, lackluster M&M Mickey heads the next morning. It was a disheartening sight! The lesson learned is invaluable: feel free to frost your cupcakes or prepare your desserts ahead of time, but always wait until the day of your event or party to add the M&M’s. This ensures they retain their bright colors and glossy finish, making your treats look as fresh and appealing as possible.

Unleashing Your Creativity: A World of M&M’s Colors

All the colors of M&M that are available for purchase spread out on a white table.

While a traditional bag of M&M’s contains a delightful mix of Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, and Dark Brown, your color options are far from limited to these. You can achieve many fun and colorful designs with the standard assortment, but thanks to specialized options and bulk purchases, you don’t have to constrain your creative vision. For those who desire a specific hue or a broader palette, a vast spectrum of M&M colors is actually available. To help you navigate this vibrant world, we’ve created a comprehensive resource. Be sure to check out our Two Sisters M&M Color Guide for an exhaustive list of every single M&M color currently available, along with valuable information on where you can find them online or in your local stores.
