The inspiration for these enchanting Valentine’s Day Marshmallow Wands stems from a truly magical place: Disneyland. Every year, my sister Laurie and I embark on a cherished trip to the “Happiest Place on Earth.” During our December visit, while strolling through the vibrant Main Street Candy Store, our eyes were immediately drawn to the most adorable marshmallow wands. They were beautifully crafted, sparking an instant, shared thought – almost in unison, we exclaimed, “We could definitely make those!”

That spark of inspiration quickly became a delightful project when Laurie and I began brainstorming festive treats for Valentine’s Day. We knew we had to recreate those charming Marshmallow Wands, infusing them with the spirit of love and romance. The project was an overwhelming success in our kitchen and, more importantly, with our families. My husband, a tough critic when it comes to desserts, even declared them the best treat we had ever made! The irresistible combination of rich chocolate and fluffy marshmallows is simply divine, and their “on-a-stick” format makes them incredibly easy and fun to eat. We are absolutely certain these will become a regular feature in our holiday baking repertoire.

Beyond their delightful taste, Valentine’s Day Marshmallow Wands offer so many wonderful advantages. They are remarkably cost-effective compared to store-bought gourmet treats, allowing you to create a generous batch without breaking the bank. Furthermore, making them is a fantastic activity to share with children or loved ones, fostering creativity and creating lasting memories in the kitchen. Each wand can be personalized with different sprinkles, candy melts, or M&M’s, making them unique gifts for friends, teachers, or as an impressive centerpiece for your Valentine’s Day party spread. Their charming appearance and undeniable deliciousness make them a perfect choice for expressing your affection this season.

How to Prepare Your Fluffy Marshmallows

The foundation of a perfect marshmallow wand begins with careful preparation of your marshmallows. Follow these simple steps to ensure a sturdy and appealing base for your chocolate coating:

  1. Step 1: Sort and Select. Just like snowflakes, no two marshmallows are exactly alike! To achieve a uniform and aesthetically pleasing result for your wands, it’s crucial to sort through your bag of regular-sized marshmallows. Look for similar sizes and shapes, matching them up into sets of three. This step might seem minor, but it ensures your wands look professional and are easier to coat evenly.
  2. Step 2: First Marshmallow. Gently push the first marshmallow onto the lollipop stick. Guide it carefully to the base of the stick, ensuring it’s securely in place without tearing.
  3. Step 3: Second Marshmallow. Add the second marshmallow onto the stick, sliding it down until it snugly meets the first. Adjust both marshmallows as needed to ensure they are straight and aligned, creating a solid column.
  4. Step 4: Third Marshmallow Placement. Finally, add the third marshmallow. This step is key for preventing dryness: only press this marshmallow halfway down onto the stick. It’s vital that the lollipop stick does not protrude through the top of the third marshmallow. If the stick pokes out, the marshmallow will be exposed to air and can dry out, compromising the texture and freshness of your delicious treat. This careful placement ensures the entire marshmallow tower remains soft and delightful.

Mastering the Melt: How to Prepare Your Chocolate

The quality of your chocolate coating is paramount to the success of your marshmallow wands. Achieving a smooth, perfectly melted chocolate is easier than you think with these microwave tips:

  1. Step 5: Measure and Place. Start by placing 1/2 cup of chocolate melting wafers (or chocolate chips) into a microwave-safe dish or on a paper plate. This quantity is ideal for covering approximately four marshmallow pops at a time. Working with smaller batches prevents the chocolate from hardening too quickly, ensuring a smooth coating process. We highly recommend using melting wafers, such as Ghirardelli, as they tend to melt into a thinner, more consistent texture, which makes coating much easier than with standard chocolate chips. While chocolate chips work, they can sometimes result in a slightly thicker and more clumpy coating. Both taste delicious, but for ease of application, wafers are superior.
  2. Step 6: Initial Microwave Burst. Microwave the chocolate for 30 seconds. After this initial burst, carefully remove it from the microwave, check its consistency, and give it a good stir. Even if it doesn’t look fully melted, stirring helps to distribute the heat and begin the melting process evenly.
  3. Step 7: Gradual Heating. Continue microwaving the chocolate in short, 10-second intervals. After each interval, remove the dish and stir thoroughly. This alternating process of heating and stirring is crucial for preventing the chocolate from overheating, burning, or seizing. Patience here will yield the best results.
  4. Step 8: Achieve Smoothness. Once the chocolate is almost entirely melted, with only a few small lumps remaining, give it a final, vigorous stir. The residual heat will melt any remaining pieces, leaving you with a perfectly smooth, glossy, and fluid chocolate mixture, ready for coating your marshmallow wands. Avoid the temptation to microwave for too long; a little stirring goes a long way in achieving that ideal consistency.

The Art of Coating: Covering Your Marshmallows in Chocolate

Collage image showing the steps you will need to take to cover the marshmallow wands in chocolate, including rolling and tapping off excess.

With your marshmallows prepped and your chocolate perfectly melted, it’s time for the fun part: coating! Here’s how to get that smooth, even layer of chocolate:

  1. Step 9: Roll into Chocolate. Gently roll the assembled marshmallows on the stick directly into the bowl of melted chocolate. Ensure the entire surface of all three marshmallows is evenly covered.
  2. Step 10: Spoon for Perfection. If you encounter any difficulty in achieving an even coating by rolling, don’t hesitate to use a spoon. Keep one handy and simply spoon the melted chocolate over any bare spots on the marshmallows. You can also use the spoon to smooth out any excess or uneven patches, creating a beautifully consistent surface.
  3. Step 11: Don’t Forget the Top! Pay special attention to the very top marshmallow. Make sure to dip its surface fully into the chocolate. This creates a completely sealed and attractive finish for your wand.
  4. Step 12: Remove Excess Chocolate. Once your marshmallow pop is fully covered, hold it over the chocolate dish and lightly tap the stick against the edge of the plate. This gentle tapping helps to remove any excess chocolate, preventing drips and creating a clean, professional look. Give the pop a quick visual check to ensure every part is covered.
  5. Step 13: Drying on Parchment. Carefully place the chocolate-covered marshmallow wand onto a piece of parchment paper. Laying them down will result in a slightly “flat side” where they rest. If you prefer a perfectly rounded finish on all sides, you’ll need to allow them to dry standing upright. For this, you can use a foam block (like floral foam) or a piece of Styrofoam, poking the lollipop sticks into it until the chocolate hardens completely.

Sparkle and Drizzle: How to Decorate Your Marshmallow Wands

Now for the most exciting part: transforming your chocolate-covered marshmallows into enchanting Valentine’s Day wands!

  1. Step 14: Gather Your Decorations. Lay out all your chosen decorating supplies. For a festive Valentine’s theme, we used a mix of Valentine’s colored sprinkles, themed M&M’s, and pink, red, and white candy melts. Consider adding edible glitter, tiny candy hearts, or even mini chocolate chips for extra flair.
  2. Step 15: Prepare Candy Melts for Drizzling. For creating vibrant drizzles, melt 15-20 individual candy melts of each desired color in separate small Ziploc bags. Place the bags in the microwave and heat in 20-second intervals. Between intervals, massage the bags to help the candy melts liquefy evenly. Continue until smooth. The Ziploc bag method is incredibly convenient for controlled drizzling.

  1. Step 16: Applying M&M’s and Sprinkles (Timing is Key!). If you plan to adorn your wands with M&M’s, candy hearts, or sprinkles, you must apply them immediately after the chocolate coating. The melted chocolate begins to set quickly, so press these decorations gently but firmly into the wet chocolate to ensure they adhere properly before it hardens.
  2. Step 17: Drizzling with Candy Melts. For the beautiful candy melt drizzle, you should wait until the main chocolate coating has completely hardened. Once the base chocolate is firm, snip a *very, very tiny* tip off one corner of your Ziploc bag filled with melted candy melts. A small hole gives you maximum control for delicate drizzles. Hold the wand over your parchment paper and move the bag in quick, back-and-forth motions to create appealing lines.
  3. Step 18: Layering Colors. To create a truly festive and vibrant look, alternate colors of your candy melt drizzles. Allow each color to set for a minute or two before adding the next, or drizzle quickly for a more blended effect. Experiment with different patterns – zigzags, straight lines, or even small dots – to make each wand uniquely beautiful.

Step 19: Allow to Harden. This final step is crucial for perfect marshmallow wands. Allow all the chocolate and candy melt decorations to harden completely. This can take anywhere from 15-30 minutes at room temperature, or you can speed up the process by placing them in the refrigerator for about 10-15 minutes (though be mindful of potential chocolate discoloration if left too long). Ensure they are firm to the touch before handling or serving.

Once fully set, these delightful Valentine’s Day Marshmallow Wands are ready to be enjoyed! Their striking appearance and irresistible combination of soft marshmallow and rich chocolate make them an instant favorite. They are perfect for Valentine’s Day parties, as heartfelt homemade gifts, or simply as a special treat to share with your loved ones.

Valentine’s Day Marshmallow Wands

These Valentine’s Day Marshmallow Wands are so easy to make and so very delicious. They are an amazingly beautiful Valentine’s Day treat to make for your family.

Yield
8 Marshmallow Wands
Prep Time
10 minutes
Additional Time
20 minutes
Total Time
30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 24 Marshmallows (Regular Size)
  • 1 cup Ghirardelli Chocolate Melting Wafers or Chocolate Chips
  • 15 Red Candy Melts
  • 15 Pink Candy Melts
  • 15 White Candy Melts
  • Valentine’s Day sprinkles
  • Valentine’s Mix M&M’s
  • Lollipop Sticks

Instructions

  1. Prepare the marshmallows before melting the chocolate. Marshmallows are like snowflakes … no two are the same, so you want to make sure you have like ones together. We sort through the bag of marshmallows and match them up in sets of threes.
  2. Place the first marshmallow on the lollipop stick.
  3. Add the second marshmallow, and adjust them on the lollipop stick.
  4. Add the third marshmallow but only press the marshmallow halfway down onto the stick. You do not want the stick to come out the top of the third marshmallow or the marshmallow will dry out.
  5. Place the 1/2 cup of melting wafers on a microwave-safe dish or paper plate. (This amount of chocolate should be enough to cover four Marshmallow Pops.)
  6. Microwave the chocolate for 30 seconds, check it and give it a stir.
  7. Continue to microwave the chocolate, 10 seconds at a time, alternating between heating and stirring.
  8. Once the chocolate is almost completely melted, give it a final stir to make sure it is completely smooth.
  9. Roll the marshmallows on the stick in the melted chocolate.
  10. If you have problems rolling the marshmallows in the chocolate, have a spoon handy and you can spoon the chocolate over the marshmallows and smooth out the chocolate on the marshmallows.
  11. Don’t forget to dip the top of the marshmallow into chocolate.
  12. Once the marshmallow pop is completely covered with chocolate, lightly tap the stick on the edge of the plate to get the excess chocolate off. Give it a once over to make sure it is all covered and place it on a piece of parchment paper. This will leave a “flat side” on the marshmallow, so if you want it rounded on all sides you will have to let them dry standing up and for that, you will need a foam brick to put the sticks into.
  13. You can use candy melts to decorate the Marshmallow Pops. Candy melts can be found in the Cake Decorating section in most Craft Supply stores, Amazon, and Walmart. We used Red, White, Light Pink, and Dark Pink.
  14. While the chocolate on the marshmallow pops is drying, melt 15-20 each of different colored candy melts in individual Ziploc bags in the microwave. Microwave them in 20-second intervals, massage the baggies to make sure the candy melt mixture is melting, and then microwave again if needed.
  15. Once melted, cut the tip off the bag and drizzle the first color of candy melt over the marshmallow pop.
  16. Alternating colors, drizzle the rest of the melted candy over the Valentine’s Marshmallow Pops.
  17. Allow the marshmallow pops to harden completely before serving.
  18. Optional decorating ideas: while chocolate is still warm sprinkle the Marshmallow Pops with sprinkles or Valentine’s M&M’s.
  19. Allow the drizzle on the Marshmallow Pops to harden before storing in an air-tight container.

Notes

We have tried both melting chocolate and chocolate chips to coat the marshmallows and found the melting chocolate much easier to use. It melted into a thinner consistency so covering the marshmallows was easier. The chocolate chips were a little clumpy and made a much thicker coating of chocolate. As for taste, there was no difference. They were both delicious.

Candy melts can be found in the Cake Decorating section in most Craft Supply stores, Amazon, and Walmart. We used Red, White and Pink.

It is best to work with 1/2 cup of chocolate melting wafers at a time otherwise the melted chocolate will start to harden and it is too hard to cover the marshmallows.

Marshmallow Pops will last for a couple of weeks if you store them in an airtight container. And there is no need to keep them in the refrigerator, in fact, the chocolate might discolor if you do store them in the refrigerator.
