Essential Ingredients for Your Easter Candy Popcorn
Crafting the perfect batch of Easter Candy Popcorn begins with selecting the right ingredients. Each component plays a vital role in achieving that coveted balance of sweet, salty, and crunchy. Here’s a detailed look at what you’ll need to create this delightful treat, along with a few tips for optimal results:

- 10 Cups of Popped Popcorn: The foundation of our recipe. Freshly popped popcorn offers the best texture and flavor. While stovetop popcorn is highly recommended for its superior crispness, air-popped or even plain microwave popcorn (without added butter or artificial flavors) can also be used. The goal is light, airy kernels ready to be coated.
- 3 Tablespoons Butter (Sweet Cream, Salted): Butter is crucial for creating the rich, smooth marshmallow coating. Salted butter adds another layer to our sweet and salty profile, enhancing the overall depth of flavor. Unsalted butter can be used, but you might want to increase the salt added to the popcorn.
- 3 Cups Mini Marshmallows: These melt down beautifully to create the sticky, sweet coating that binds everything together. Mini marshmallows melt faster and more evenly than larger ones, ensuring a smooth mixture.
- Handful of Mini Marshmallows (for mix-ins): Adding a few extra mini marshmallows at the end provides a lovely chewy texture and visual appeal, complementing the crisp popcorn and crunchy candy.
- Bunny Mix M&M’s or Easter Mix M&M’s: These iconic chocolate candies, in their festive pastel colors, are a must-have. They add a satisfying crunch and a burst of chocolatey goodness, along with vibrant visual charm.
- Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Candy Coated Eggs or similar Easter Candy Eggs: These provide another layer of chocolate and candy crunch, often with a slightly different coating texture. Their egg shape instantly evokes the Easter theme, making the popcorn even more festive.
- Salt: A crucial, often underestimated ingredient. Liberally salting your popcorn prior to coating creates the delightful sweet-and-salty contrast that makes this treat so addictive.
Preparing the Popcorn Base
The secret to truly outstanding Easter Candy Popcorn lies in starting with a perfectly prepared popcorn base. This isn’t just about popping kernels; it’s about ensuring a crisp, light, and well-salted foundation that will beautifully complement the sweet marshmallow coating and colorful candies.

Step 1: Pop Your Popcorn. You will need precisely 10 cups of popped popcorn for this recipe. While we highly recommend popping your popcorn on the stove for the freshest, crispiest results (you can find detailed instructions on How to Make Perfect Popcorn here), you can certainly use an air-popper or even microwave popcorn. If opting for microwave popcorn, choose a plain, unbuttered variety to avoid conflicting flavors with our marshmallow mixture.
Step 2: Remove Un-popped Kernels. This step is critical for a pleasant eating experience. After your popcorn is popped, carefully transfer it to a large bowl and take the time to diligently remove all un-popped kernels. Biting down on a hard kernel can be quite jarring and detract from the enjoyment of your delicious treat. A quick sift or manual pick-through will ensure every bite is soft and fluffy.
Step 3: Salt Liberally. Once you have your perfectly popped and de-kernelled popcorn, it’s time to salt it generously. The contrast between the salty popcorn and the sweet marshmallow coating is what truly elevates this dish, creating a flavor profile reminiscent of kettle corn, but with an extra layer of decadence. Salt the popcorn as soon as it’s popped and still warm; this helps the salt adhere better, ensuring an even distribution of flavor. Don’t be shy with the salt – it’s key to achieving that irresistible sweet and salty harmony!
Crafting the Velvety Marshmallow Mixture
The luscious marshmallow coating is what transforms ordinary popcorn into an extraordinary Easter dessert. Achieving a smooth, perfectly melted mixture is straightforward, but requires a bit of attention to ensure it’s just right for coating your popcorn.

Step 4: Melt the Butter. In a medium-sized saucepan, add 3 tablespoons of butter. Place the saucepan over medium heat, allowing the butter to slowly melt. Stir occasionally to ensure even melting and prevent scorching. You want the butter to be completely liquified and golden, forming the rich base for our marshmallow coating.
Step 5: Introduce the Marshmallows. Once the butter is fully melted, add 3 cups of mini marshmallows to the saucepan. Mini marshmallows are preferred here because their smaller size allows them to melt more quickly and uniformly, contributing to a smooth, lump-free mixture.
Step 6: Stir Until Smooth. Begin stirring the marshmallows immediately, ensuring they are thoroughly coated in the melted butter. Continue stirring constantly until the marshmallows are completely melted and have transformed into a silky, cohesive liquid. The butter helps prevent sticking and adds a wonderful flavor to the marshmallow base. Persistence in stirring is key here to avoid any burnt spots or uneven melting.
Step 7: Remove from Heat. As soon as the last marshmallow has melted and you have a completely smooth, gooey mixture, promptly remove the saucepan from the heat. Overheating can cause the marshmallows to become tough or develop an off-flavor, so timeliness is important for maintaining that perfect, pliable stickiness.
Combining for Irresistible Marshmallow Popcorn
This stage is where the magic truly happens, transforming simple popcorn and marshmallow into a delightful, sticky base for our Easter treat. The key is to work quickly and gently to ensure every kernel is perfectly coated.

Step 8 & 9: Gradually Add Marshmallow Mixture. With your salted popcorn in a large bowl, slowly pour approximately one-third of the warm marshmallow mixture over it. Resist the urge to dump it all at once; a gradual approach ensures better coverage.
Step 10: Gently Fold and Combine. Using a large spatula or spoon, gently fold the marshmallow mixture into the popcorn. The goal is to coat the popcorn without crushing it. Continue to add the remaining marshmallow mixture in small increments, folding thoroughly between each addition. This technique ensures that every piece of popcorn gets a lovely, even coating of the sweet, sticky goodness.
Step 11: Ensure Full Coverage. By the time you’ve added all the marshmallow mixture, your popcorn should be beautifully and completely coated. Each kernel should glisten with the warm, sticky sweetness, ready for the next exciting step.

Step 12: Spread onto a Prepared Cookie Sheet. Now, carefully pour the marshmallow-coated popcorn onto a large cookie sheet. Make sure your cookie sheet is lined with parchment paper, foil, or a Silpat liner. This non-stick surface is essential to prevent the sticky popcorn from adhering to the pan, making cleanup a breeze.
Step 13: Evenly Distribute. Using your spatula, gently spread the popcorn out into an even layer across the cookie sheet. Don’t press it down too firmly, as you want to maintain some airiness. An even layer ensures consistent cooling and makes it easier to distribute your Easter candy mix-ins in the next stage.
Easter Candy Mix-Ins: Adding Color and Crunch
This is where your Easter Candy Popcorn truly comes to life, bursting with color and festive cheer! The selection of candies can dramatically impact both the visual appeal and the flavor profile of your final treat. Choose wisely to create a stunning and delicious confection.

Step 14: Prepare Your Candy Mix-Ins. For our recipe, we’ve chosen a delightful combination to maximize both flavor and visual appeal. Gather a generous handful of Easter Mix M&M’s, their pastel colors perfectly matching the spring theme. Next, select some Candy Coated Milk Chocolate Eggs, which add a lovely textural contrast and an extra burst of chocolate. Finally, a sprinkling of Mini Marshmallows (separate from the melted ones) adds a soft, chewy element. Consider breaking any larger candies into smaller pieces if you want a more uniform distribution and easier eating. Other great options include jelly beans, pastel sprinkles, or chopped white chocolate.
Final Assembly: Bringing Your Easter Candy Popcorn Together
The final steps are quick and easy, but timing is key to ensure your festive candies adhere perfectly to the sweet popcorn base. Get ready to watch your creation come to life with a splash of Easter cheer!

Step 15: Sprinkle the Candies. Once the popcorn is spread evenly on the cookie sheet and thoroughly coated in the marshmallow mixture, it’s time to add your chosen candies. This step needs to happen quickly! You want the marshmallow mixture to still be warm and delightfully sticky so that the candies and mini marshmallows adhere firmly. Liberally sprinkle your Easter Mix M&M’s, Candy Coated Milk Chocolate Eggs, and additional mini marshmallows over the popcorn. Feel free to use your hands to gently press some of the candies into the popcorn to ensure they stick well.
Step 16: Cool, Break, and Serve. Allow the Easter Candy Popcorn to cool completely. This cooling period is crucial for the marshmallow to set and firm up, preventing a sticky mess. Once fully cooled and set, gently break the popcorn apart into individual clusters or bite-sized pieces. Serve immediately for the freshest taste, or prepare it for storage or gifting. The vibrant colors and irresistible aroma will make it hard to resist!
Expert Tips and FAQS for Perfect Easter Candy Popcorn
Achieving the perfect batch of Easter Candy Popcorn is simple with a few insider tips and answers to common questions. Here’s everything you need to know to make your treat absolutely irresistible:
For the ultimate sweet and salty experience, we highly recommend making your popcorn from scratch on the stove. There’s truly nothing quite like the fresh, crisp texture and flavor of homemade popcorn. You can find all the tips and tricks for perfect stovetop popcorn right here. If time is a concern, air-popped popcorn is an excellent alternative. If using microwave popcorn, be sure to select a plain variety with no added butter flavoring or excessive salt, as these can interfere with the delicate balance of our recipe.
When it comes to this recipe, embracing the contrast of sweet and salty is paramount, so don’t be shy with the salt! We recommend a generous hand when salting the popcorn; you should lean towards what might feel like over-salting for a regular snack. The optimal time to salt is immediately after the popcorn comes out of the hot pan, as the heat helps the salt crystals adhere to the kernels. This bold salty base is crucial for cutting through the sweetness of the marshmallow and candies, creating that incredibly addictive flavor profile.
Easter-themed M&M’s, often labeled as “Bunny Mix” or “Easter Mix,” are seasonal items. You’ll typically find them readily available in most grocery stores and supermarkets starting in March and through April, leading up to Easter. Specialty candy stores and party supply shops are also great places to check for unique holiday candies. For convenience, you can often find them online through major retailers or directly on the M&M website during the spring season. Don’t hesitate to grab them when you see them, as they tend to sell out quickly!
In our household, this delicious popcorn rarely lasts more than a day! However, for optimal freshness, this popcorn is truly at its best when enjoyed shortly after it’s made. If you have leftovers or are preparing it ahead, store the Easter Candy Popcorn in an airtight container at room temperature. It will keep well for about 2-3 days. Please note that over time, the popcorn may become a little chewier as it absorbs some moisture from the marshmallow mixture, but it will still taste wonderful. Avoid refrigerating, as this can make the popcorn stale faster.
Absolutely! This recipe is incredibly versatile and perfect for customization. Feel free to experiment with your favorite Easter candies. Pastel-colored jelly beans, chocolate chips, white chocolate chunks, sprinkles, or even crushed pretzel bits for an extra salty crunch would all be fantastic additions. You could also try drizzling with melted white chocolate for an extra layer of sweetness and visual appeal. Just ensure any additional candies are added while the marshmallow mixture is still warm and sticky to guarantee they adhere well.

Notes
What kind of popcorn should I use?
We make our popcorn from scratch on the stove – nothing is better than that in our opinion. You can find all the tips and tricks you need to make the perfect popcorn right here. You can also use Microwave popcorn but you should use a type that has no butter flavoring added.
How much salt should I put on the popcorn?
The contrast of sweet and salty in this popcorn recipe is super yummy. To get that combination you should lean towards over-salting the popcorn. We try to salt the popcorn as soon as it comes out of the pan so that salt sticks to the hot popcorn.
How long will the popcorn last?
Our family loves this popcorn so it has never lasted longer than a day at our house. This popcorn definitely tastes the best right after it is made but will keep for a few days in an airtight container. The popcorn is a little chewier the next day because the popcorn absorbs some of the moisture from the marshmallow mixture but it still tastes good.
