Why Choose an M&M Peppa Pig Cake?
Peppa Pig holds a special place in the hearts of preschoolers worldwide. Her adventures with George, Mummy Pig, and Daddy Pig are relatable, funny, and full of valuable lessons about family and friendship. For many young children, a Peppa Pig-themed birthday party is the ultimate dream. While there are countless ways to incorporate Peppa into your celebration, a custom-made cake truly brings the theme to life and serves as the ultimate party centerpiece.
Our M&M Peppa Pig Cake offers several advantages:
- Simplicity: Unlike cakes requiring advanced decorating skills, this design uses readily available M&M candies, making it incredibly accessible for bakers of all skill levels.
- Kid-Friendly Appeal: Children love M&M’s! The vibrant colors and distinct texture add an extra layer of fun and deliciousness that traditional frosting decorations sometimes lack.
- Customization: You can choose any cake flavor or shape as your base, allowing you to tailor it to your child’s preferences.
- Engagement: It’s a fantastic project to involve older children in the decorating process, turning cake making into a memorable family activity.
- Stunning Visuals: The mosaic-like effect of the M&M’s creates a visually striking cake that looks professionally made, yet is surprisingly easy to achieve.
This cake is not just a dessert; it’s a statement piece that will have everyone reaching for their cameras and admiring your creative efforts. Let’s dive into how you can create this wonderful treat!
Gathering Your Essential Peppa Pig Cake Supplies
Before you embark on your cake decorating journey, it’s crucial to have all your ingredients and tools ready. Preparation is key to a smooth and enjoyable experience, especially when you’re working with a time limit or eager little helpers!
The Foundation: Your Cake Base
The beauty of this Peppa Pig cake design is its versatility regarding the cake itself. You can choose to bake your own cake from scratch, use a boxed cake mix for convenience, or even purchase a pre-baked, un-frosted cake from your local bakery or grocery store. The shape can also be flexible:
- Round Cakes: An 8-inch or 9-inch round cake provides a perfect circular canvas for Peppa’s head. If using a two-layer cake, ensure both layers are level before frosting.
- Sheet Cakes: A 9×13-inch sheet cake offers a larger surface area, which can be great for bigger parties or if you want Peppa’s face to be more prominent.
- Other Bases: Don’t limit yourself! A pan of brownies or even a large cookie cake could also serve as an unconventional yet fun base for your Peppa Pig design.
For our demonstration, we used a basic two-layer round yellow cake, which provided a lovely height and classic feel. Choose what works best for your schedule and preferences.
The Best Buttercream Frosting for a Smooth Finish
A good frosting is the canvas for your M&M art. We highly recommend using our Best Buttercream Frosting recipe. Its smooth consistency and delicious flavor make it ideal for both frosting the cake and holding the M&M’s in place. You will find the recipe and detailed directions for our buttercream here.
Regarding quantity:
- For an average 9×13-inch sheet cake or an 8-inch double-layer round cake, a single batch of our buttercream frosting should suffice.
- If you’re working with a larger cake, or if you prefer a thicker layer of frosting, it’s always safer to prepare two batches to ensure you have plenty.
Once your buttercream is prepared, you’ll need to color it. We used just 2 drops of Wilton Color Right Food Coloring to achieve a soft, light pink shade that perfectly complements Peppa Pig’s cheerful palette. Remember, a little food coloring goes a long way, so add it gradually until you reach your desired hue.
The Star of the Show: Peppa Pig Colored M&M’s

The M&M’s are what truly bring Peppa to life on your cake. For an authentic Peppa Pig M&M Cake, you’ll need a specific selection of colors:
- Dark Pink M&M’s: These are crucial for outlining Peppa’s head, ears, and cheek. We often find these in special Valentine’s Day themed M&M bags.
- Light Pink M&M’s: Used to fill in the majority of Peppa’s face. These frequently appear in Easter-themed M&M’s assortments.
- White M&M’s: Essential for Peppa’s expressive eyes. Look for these in Valentine’s or 4th of July holiday mixes.
- Red M&M’s: A few red M&M’s will perfectly craft Peppa’s tiny smiling mouth. These can be easily found in standard M&M’s packs.
- Brown M&M’s: You’ll need just a couple for the pupils of Peppa’s eyes. Also readily available in regular M&M’s packs.
Pro Tip for Sourcing Holiday M&M’s: We always make it a point to stock up on these special “holiday” M&M’s when they’re available. The week after major holidays, grocery stores often offer these bags at up to 50% off, allowing you to build a colorful stash for projects throughout the year. If you haven’t started your own collection, don’t fret! These specific dark and light pink M&M colors can often be found at party supply stores like Party City, on Amazon, or from various online candy warehouses. It’s worth checking these specialized retailers if you’re in a pinch.
Basic Decorating Tools
Beyond your cake and candies, you’ll only need a few simple tools:
- A sturdy knife (for tracing the outline).
- A printer (to print Peppa’s face template).
- A spatula or offset palette knife (for frosting the cake).
- A white cake plate or serving platter (to showcase your masterpiece).
Once you have all these components ready, you’re halfway to creating an unforgettable Peppa Pig cake!
Bringing Peppa to Life: Step-by-Step Decoration Guide

With your cake baked and your ingredients gathered, it’s time for the fun part: decorating! This is where Peppa Pig truly comes to life.
Step 1: Prepare and Color Your Frosting
First, ensure your Best Buttercream Frosting is freshly made and at the right consistency – smooth and spreadable, but not too thin. As mentioned earlier, prepare 1-2 batches depending on your cake size. Next, add 2 drops of Wilton Color Right Food Coloring to achieve a lovely light pink hue. Stir thoroughly until the color is uniform throughout the frosting.
Step 2: Frost Your Cake
Carefully transfer your cake onto your chosen serving plate or stand. Using an offset spatula or a butter knife, generously apply the pink buttercream frosting over the entire surface of your cake. Aim for a smooth, even layer across the top and sides. Don’t worry about absolute perfection here, as the M&M’s will cover most of the surface, but a relatively even base will ensure your M&M’s sit nicely.
Step 3: Create Peppa’s Outline Template

This is where the magic begins! Go to Google Images (or your preferred search engine) and search for a clear, simple picture of Peppa Pig’s face. Print this image out, making sure to size it so that Peppa’s head fits perfectly on top of your frosted cake. You might need to experiment with different print sizes. Once you have the correctly sized print-out, gently lay it on top of your freshly frosted cake. Be careful not to press down too hard, just enough to keep it in place.
Step 4: Trace Peppa’s Head
Using a small, sharp knife (a paring knife works well), very lightly trace the outline of Peppa’s head onto the frosting. You don’t need to cut deeply, just create a subtle impression in the buttercream that will serve as your guide. Once you’ve traced the entire outline, carefully lift and remove the paper print-out from the cake.

Step 5: Outline Peppa with Dark Pink M&M’s
Now, using the light line you’ve just traced as your guide, carefully place your Dark Pink M&M’s along the entire outline of Peppa’s head. Arrange them closely together, side-by-side, to create a distinct and neat border. This step establishes the basic shape and defines Peppa’s silhouette.

Step 6: Create Peppa’s Ears
Refer back to your original Peppa Pig image for placement. Using the Dark Pink M&M’s, form Peppa’s ears. Remember that her back ear (the one further away from her snout) is typically depicted as slightly larger or more elongated than her front ear. Once the outlines of the ears are formed with Dark Pink M&M’s, fill in the empty spaces within the ears with Light Pink M&M’s, ensuring a smooth, solid candy surface.
Step 7: Craft Peppa’s Mouth
Again, using your printed picture as a precise guide for placement, create Peppa’s signature small, cheerful smiling mouth. Carefully place the Red M&M’s in a slightly curved line to form her adorable smile. This touch of red adds a pop of color and character.
Step 8: Form Peppa’s Eyes
Peppa’s eyes are simple yet crucial for her recognizable look. Use the White M&M’s to create the white part of her eyes, positioning them according to your reference image. Then, for her pupils, place a single Brown M&M on each white M&M. This instantly brings her face to life!
Step 9: Add Peppa’s Cheek
A distinctive feature of Peppa Pig is her rosy cheek. Using Dark Pink M&M’s, create a small, circular or oval shape on the side of her face where her cheek would naturally be. This adds depth and another layer of character to your design.

Step 10: Fill in Peppa’s Face with Light Pink M&M’s
With all the defining features in place, it’s time to complete Peppa’s face. Starting from the nose area and working your way outwards to the right, carefully fill in all the remaining empty spaces within the Dark Pink M&M outline with Light Pink M&M’s. Arrange them snugly to create a solid, appealing candy surface. This step is like coloring within the lines, but with delicious M&M’s!
That’s truly all there is to it! The most time-consuming part of this entire project is typically baking and cooling the cake itself. The frosting and decorating of our Peppa Pig M&M Cake took less than 30 minutes, and that includes the time it takes to whip up the homemade buttercream. The result is a vibrant, fun, and utterly delicious “Smash Cake” that was a gigantic hit for the birthday girl at her Peppa Pig Birthday Party. It also perfectly complemented our other Peppa Pig themed treats, such as our Peppa Pig Frosted Sugar Cookies and Peppa Pig Cupcakes.

Tips for Peppa Pig Cake Perfection
To ensure your Peppa Pig cake turns out as delightful as possible, consider these additional tips:
- Chill Your Cake: Before frosting, make sure your cake is completely cool. A slightly chilled cake is also easier to frost smoothly.
- Sort M&M’s Ahead: To save time during decorating, pre-sort your M&M’s by color into separate bowls.
- Work in a Cool Environment: If your kitchen is warm, your buttercream might soften too quickly. A cooler room will help the frosting and M&M’s hold their positions better.
- Don’t Rush: While the decorating process is quick, taking your time with each M&M placement will result in a neater, more professional-looking cake.
- Gentle Pressure: When placing M&M’s, apply gentle pressure to embed them slightly into the frosting. This helps them stay put without sinking too deep.
- Involve the Kids (Safely): Older children can help with sorting M&M’s or even placing the light pink M&M’s to fill in the face, making it a fun family activity.
- Clean Edges: Use a clean paper towel or a small brush to gently wipe away any smudges of frosting from the cake plate after decorating.
Serving and Storing Your Peppa Pig Masterpiece
Your beautiful Peppa Pig cake is ready to be admired and devoured! For the best experience, serve the cake at room temperature, as this allows the buttercream to be at its most creamy and flavorful. When cutting, use a sharp, warm knife for clean slices. If you have any leftovers (which is unlikely with such a popular cake!), store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2-3 days, or in the refrigerator for up to a week. Bring refrigerated cake to room temperature before serving for optimal taste and texture.
Other Peppa Pig Desserts You Will Love
A Peppa Pig party isn’t complete without a spread of themed treats! Complement your stunning Peppa Pig cake with these equally delightful desserts:
- Peppa Pig Cupcakes: Easy to make and perfect for individual servings.
- Peppa Pig Cookies: Adorable frosted sugar cookies that double as party favors.
- Peppa Pig Rice Krispie Treats: A chewy, sweet, and fun no-bake option.
Creating a cohesive dessert table adds an extra layer of charm and excitement to your party, and these recipes make it incredibly easy to achieve a truly memorable Peppa Pig celebration.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Making Your Peppa Pig Cake
We’ve compiled answers to some common questions you might have while making your Peppa Pig cake:
Q: Can I use fondant instead of M&M’s for Peppa’s face?
A: While you certainly could, using M&M’s is specifically what makes this cake so easy and accessible for beginners. Fondant requires different skills and tools for cutting and shaping. If you’re looking for simplicity, stick with the M&M’s!
Q: What if I can’t find pink M&M’s?
A: If specific pink M&M’s are unavailable, you have a few alternatives:
1. Other Pink Candies: Look for other small, round pink candies, like Skittles (though these have a different texture) or customized M&M’s from specialized candy stores.
2. Food Coloring for Candy Melts: You could melt white chocolate or candy melts, color them pink with oil-based food coloring, and then spread them thinly on parchment paper to cool and harden. Once firm, you can break them into small pieces to use like M&M’s (though this is more involved).
3. Frosting Details: As a last resort, you could pipe the details of Peppa’s face using different shades of pink frosting, but the M&M mosaic effect is unique.
Q: Can I make this cake ahead of time?
A: Yes! You can bake and frost the cake a day or two in advance. Store the frosted cake in an airtight container at room temperature if using buttercream, or in the refrigerator if your environment is warm. We recommend applying the M&M’s closer to the party time (the same day or the evening before) to ensure their colors remain vibrant and they don’t soften excessively into the frosting.
Q: What cake flavor works best?
A: Any flavor your child loves will be perfect! Classic yellow cake, vanilla, or even strawberry cake complements the pink theme wonderfully. Chocolate cake is also a popular choice that tastes great with buttercream.
Q: My frosting isn’t perfectly smooth. Will it ruin the cake?
A: Not at all! The M&M’s will cover the vast majority of the top surface, so minor imperfections in your frosting layer will be hidden. Focus on getting a relatively even coat rather than absolute flawlessness.

Instructions
- Gather up the M&M’s: You will need Dark Pink, Light Pink, Red, White, and Brown M&M’s.

- Find a picture of Peppa Pig on Google Images: Print it out so Peppa’s head fits proportionally on top of your cake. Carefully lay the print-out on the frosted cake, but do not press down.

- Using your traced line as a guideline, use Dark Pink M&M’s to define the outside border of Peppa’s head.

Notes
Where to find the M&M’s
We used Dark Pink and Light Pink colored M&M’s to create our Peppa Pig M&M Cake. The Dark Pink M&M’s were typically sourced from special Valentine’s Day bags, and the Light Pink M&M’s from Easter-themed bags. We often stock up on these special “holiday” M&M’s when they are available at up to 50% off in grocery stores in the week after a holiday. If you don’t have a stash, you can often find these specific colors at Party Supply stores like Party City, on Amazon, or from other online candy warehouses. You’ll also need a handful of white M&M’s for Peppa’s eyes (also found in Valentine’s and 4th of July bags), and a few red and brown M&M’s, which are readily available in small packs of regular M&M’s.
