Ingredients You Will Need for Your Elmo Cupcakes
Crafting these iconic Elmo Cupcakes requires a few simple yet essential ingredients. We’ve carefully selected components that ensure both fantastic flavor and an authentic Elmo appearance. Gather these items to begin your delicious journey into Sesame Street baking:
- Chocolate Cupcakes: Your foundation for flavor. Whether you prefer a convenient box mix or a homemade recipe, ensure they are baked to perfection and fully cooled.
- The Best Buttercream Frosting: This will be the canvas for Elmo’s vibrant red fur. A delicious, stable buttercream is key for both taste and decoration.
- Red Food Coloring: To achieve Elmo’s unmistakable crimson hue. Gel food coloring is highly recommended for concentrated color without altering frosting consistency.
- Wilton Frosting Tip #233 and Decorating Bag: This special tip creates the iconic “grass” or “fur” texture, essential for Elmo’s fuzzy appearance.
- Oreo Cookies: For Elmo’s wide, cheerful mouth. You’ll use the cookie wafers, so plan to remove the cream filling.
- White Candy Melts: These form the whites of Elmo’s eyes, providing a smooth, bright base.
- Orange Peanut M&M’s: The perfect shape and color for Elmo’s playful nose.
- Black Icing: For dotting Elmo’s pupils onto the white candy melts, bringing his eyes to life.
Having these ingredients prepped and ready will streamline your decorating process and help you bring your Elmo Cupcakes to life with ease and confidence.

How to Make the Perfect Cupcake Base
Every great Elmo cupcake starts with a delicious and perfectly baked base. The choice of cupcake flavor is entirely up to you, though chocolate provides a wonderful contrast to the vibrant red frosting. Here’s how to ensure your cupcake foundation is flawless.

Step 1: Bake Your Cupcakes to Perfection.
Whether you’re a seasoned baker or just starting out, you have two fantastic options for your cupcake base: a convenient cake box mix or a homemade recipe from scratch.
Using a Cake Box Mix for Easy Cupcakes
For those looking to save time without sacrificing flavor, a good quality chocolate cake box mix is an excellent choice. To elevate a simple box mix to taste like it’s homemade, we recommend a few simple enhancements:
- Substitute Milk for Water: Using whole milk instead of water adds richness and moisture.
- Add an Extra Egg: This makes the cupcakes lighter and more tender.
- Incorporate Melted Butter: Replace the oil called for in the recipe with an equal amount of melted butter for a richer, more buttery flavor.
- A Dash of Vanilla Extract: A teaspoon of good quality vanilla extract can make a surprising difference in overall flavor.
Follow the package directions with these modifications for surprisingly delicious results.
Baking from Scratch for a Gourmet Touch
If you prefer the satisfaction of baking from scratch, our Homemade Chocolate Cupcakes recipe delivers a wonderfully moist and flavorful treat. While we opted for chocolate cupcakes for their rich depth, vanilla cupcakes would also make a delightful base, offering a slightly different flavor profile that pairs beautifully with the sweet buttercream. Regardless of your choice, ensure your cupcakes are completely cooled before moving on to the frosting stage. Warm cupcakes will cause your beautiful buttercream to melt and slide right off!
Crafting Elmo’s Signature Red Frosting
The frosting is where these cupcakes truly come alive, providing both the delicious topping and the vibrant red “fur” that defines Elmo. Our buttercream frosting recipe is renowned for its smooth texture and incredible flavor, making it the perfect choice for this project.

Step 2: Prepare the Ultimate Buttercream Frosting.
The foundation of these delicious cupcakes is our much-loved Best Buttercream Frosting recipe. This recipe yields a frosting that is wonderfully light, irresistibly creamy, rich with buttery flavor, and absolutely delicious! Its smooth consistency makes it ideal for piping and decorating. You can find the full recipe and detailed directions for preparing this perfect frosting right here. One batch of this versatile frosting is typically enough to generously cover approximately 16 cupcakes, ensuring every Elmo has plenty of his signature fur.
Step 3: Achieve Elmo’s Radiant Red Hue.
Now for the fun part: transforming your creamy white frosting into Elmo’s iconic, bright red color! For the most vibrant and true-to-character red, we highly recommend using gel food coloring. Gel colors are concentrated, meaning you need less of them to achieve intense hues, and they won’t thin out your frosting consistency like liquid food coloring can.
To get this specific bright shade of Elmo red, we used a combination of 10 drops of Red and 4 drops of Crimson Wilton Color Right Food Coloring. Start by adding a few drops at a time, mixing thoroughly, and gradually adding more until you reach your desired shade. Remember, a little goes a long way with gel colors, so it’s always better to add incrementally to avoid over-coloring. Mix until the color is consistent throughout the entire batch of frosting. This vibrant red will truly make your Elmo Cupcakes pop!
Bringing Elmo to Life: Decorating Steps
This is where the magic truly happens! Transforming simple cupcakes into recognizable Elmo faces is easier than you might think, thanks to a few clever tricks and the right tools. Follow these steps to give your cupcakes their adorable Elmo personalities.

Step 4: Ensure Thorough Cooling.
Before you even think about frosting, it is absolutely crucial that your cupcakes have completely cooled. Attempting to frost warm cupcakes will result in melted, sliding frosting and a very messy situation. Patience is key here; allow them to cool fully on a wire rack.
Step 5: Apply a Base Layer of Frosting.
Next, apply a thin layer of the vibrant Red Buttercream Frosting to the top of each cooled cupcake. This thin base layer serves two important purposes: it acts as an adhesive for the “fur” and ensures that no plain cupcake shows through, even if there are small gaps in your piped fur. You can use an offset spatula or a knife for this step.
Step 6: Create Elmo’s Signature Fur.
Elmo’s iconic fuzzy fur is created with the Red Buttercream Frosting using a Wilton Frosting Tip #233. This tip is specifically designed to create a “grass” or “fur” effect with multiple small holes. Load your decorating bag with the red frosting and insert the #233 tip.
Step 7: Pipe Elmo’s Full Furry Face.
Holding the decorating bag perpendicular to the cupcake, apply steady pressure and pull upwards slightly as you release, creating short, fluffy strands. Work in small sections, covering the entire cupcake top with these red “Elmo fur” strands. Overlap slightly to ensure full coverage and a consistent, plush look. Continue until the entire surface is filled, creating a wonderfully textured, fuzzy red face for Elmo.
Adding Elmo’s Adorable Features

With Elmo’s fur in place, it’s time to add his distinguishing facial features. This is where his personality truly shines through!
Step 8: Form Elmo’s Cheerful Mouth with Oreos.
Elmo’s iconic wide smile is made using Oreo cookies. This step requires a bit of preparation and care. Start by gently twisting open the Oreo cookies and carefully scraping out the white cream filling. Once the cream is removed, you need to meticulously cut the Oreo cookie wafers in half. We found that using a very sharp, thin-bladed knife and carefully “sawing” through the cookie crisp helps prevent breakage. Go slowly and apply even pressure; the cookies can be fragile. Once cut, take one half-piece of Oreo cookie and gently press it into the bottom center of the cupcake, forming Elmo’s unmistakable smiling mouth. The dark color provides a striking contrast against his red fur.
Step 9: Place Elmo’s Playful Nose.
For Elmo’s distinctive orange nose, an orange Peanut M&M candy is the perfect fit. Simply place one orange Peanut M&M candy above the Oreo mouth, right in the center of Elmo’s face. The slight curve of the M&M adds a nice dimension.
Step 10: Position Elmo’s Expressive Eyes.
To create Elmo’s wide, friendly eyes, take two White Candy Melts. Place them flat side up, positioned above the nose and slightly apart, to form the whites of his eyes. The flat surface provides a smooth area for the pupils.
Step 11: Add the Finishing Touch: Elmo’s Pupils.
Finally, use the Black Icing to create Elmo’s pupils. With a small round piping tip or even a toothpick dipped in black icing, carefully add a small dot in the middle of each White Candy Melt. You can vary the position of the pupils slightly to give Elmo different expressions – looking straight ahead, slightly to the side, or even a bit cross-eyed for a comical effect. And just like that, your Elmo Cupcakes are complete and ready to delight!

Tips for Perfect Elmo Cupcakes Every Time
Creating these adorable Elmo cupcakes is a fun process, but a few pro tips can ensure your results are consistently perfect and stress-free.
- Room Temperature Ingredients: For the buttercream, ensure your butter is at perfect room temperature. This is crucial for a smooth, lump-free frosting that whips up beautifully and pipes easily.
- Gel Food Coloring is Your Friend: As mentioned, gel food coloring provides intense color without altering the consistency of your frosting. For a truly deep red, consider using a “no-taste red” gel color to avoid any bitter aftertaste.
- Practice Piping: If you’re new to piping with the Wilton #233 grass tip, try a few practice squeezes on a piece of parchment paper or a spare plate. This helps you get a feel for the pressure needed and the length of the “fur” strands.
- Chill if Needed: If your kitchen is warm and your buttercream starts to feel too soft, pop your piping bag into the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes to firm it up slightly. Overly soft frosting will result in sloppy fur.
- Oreo Cookie Alternatives: If cutting Oreos proves too challenging, you can also use black licorice strips, cut into an arc, or pipe Elmo’s mouth directly onto the cupcake with black icing and a thin round tip.
- Make Ahead: Cupcakes can be baked a day in advance and stored in an airtight container. The buttercream can also be made a day or two ahead and stored in the fridge; just bring it to room temperature and re-whip before use.
- Storage: Once decorated, Elmo Cupcakes are best stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2-3 days. If your frosting is very delicate or your environment humid, refrigeration might be needed, but allow them to come to room temperature before serving for the best flavor and texture.
