  • Excellent for Gifting: Their beautiful appearance and delightful taste make them ideal homemade gifts for neighbors, teachers, or as additions to holiday care packages.

Ingredients You Will Need for Festive Butter Cookies

Crafting the perfect Christmas Butter Cookies begins with selecting the right ingredients. Each component plays a vital role in achieving that signature rich flavor and tender crumb.

  • Butter: Since these are, at heart, “butter” cookies, the quality of your butter is paramount. We highly recommend using Sweet Cream Salted Butter. Ensure it’s softened to room temperature before you begin. Room temperature butter creams beautifully with sugar, creating a light and fluffy base that is essential for a tender cookie. Avoid butter that is too soft or melted, as this can lead to a greasy, dense cookie.
  • Powdered Sugar: Also known as confectioners’ sugar, this fine sugar blends seamlessly into the butter, resulting in a smooth, light dough and a delicate texture in the finished cookie. Unlike granulated sugar, powdered sugar contributes to the cookies’ characteristic melt-in-your-mouth feel without a gritty texture.
  • Vanilla Extract: A good quality vanilla extract enhances the buttery flavor, adding warmth and depth to the cookies. Don’t skimp on this ingredient; pure vanilla extract will yield the best results.
  • All-Purpose Flour: Use standard all-purpose flour. When adding it to the mixture, do so gradually and mix just until combined. Overmixing the flour can develop the gluten too much, leading to tough cookies.
  • Food Coloring: This is where the magic happens for our Christmas colors! You can use any gel food coloring you have on hand. For truly vibrant Christmas Red and Green, we find that Wilton Color Right Food Coloring delivers exceptional intensity with just a few drops. Gel food colorings are concentrated, so they won’t alter the consistency of your dough like liquid food colorings might.
  • Sparkling Sugar: This ingredient is optional but highly recommended for that extra touch of holiday sparkle! Sparkling sugar, with its larger granules, catches the light beautifully, giving your cookies a dazzling, festive finish. We’ve had great success with both larger sparkling sugar sprinkles and coarse sugar. Both add a delightful textural crunch and a shimmering appearance.

Essential Kitchen Tools

To make your cookie-baking experience smooth and enjoyable, gather these essential kitchen tools:

  • Stand mixer with paddle attachment (or a hand mixer)
  • Large mixing bowls
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Rubber spatula
  • Parchment paper
  • Baking sheets
  • Plastic wrap
  • Sharp knife or bench scraper
  • Food scale (optional, but helpful for even dough portions)

How to Make the Cookie Dough for Christmas Butter Cookies

Creating the base for these festive treats is incredibly straightforward. Follow these steps to achieve a perfectly smooth and pliable dough.

Collage image showing the process of making the red, white, and green butter cookie dough: creaming butter and sugar, adding vanilla, and incorporating flour.

Step 1: Cream the Butter and Sugar. In the bowl of your stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment (or using a hand mixer), combine the softened butter and powdered sugar. Cream them together on medium speed until the mixture is light, fluffy, and pale in color. This process incorporates air, which is crucial for the tender texture of butter cookies. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed to ensure everything is thoroughly combined.

Step 2: Add Vanilla and Flour. Pour in the vanilla extract and continue mixing for another minute until fully incorporated and fragrant. Next, gradually add the all-purpose flour, one cup at a time, mixing on low speed until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can develop the gluten in the flour, making the cookies tough. The dough should come together into a soft, cohesive ball. Easy peasy – your delicious butter cookie base is now ready!

How to Color the Cookie Dough for a Striking Holiday Effect

This is where your Christmas Butter Cookies truly come to life with their festive hues!

Step 3: Divide the Dough. Carefully separate your freshly made cookie dough into three equal portions. For precision and consistency, we recommend using a food scale to weigh the dough. However, if you don’t have one, you can simply eyeball the divisions to create three roughly equal balls of dough.

Step 4: Infuse with Christmas Colors. Now it’s time to add that holiday magic!

  • Take one portion of dough and, using gel food coloring, tint it a vibrant Christmas Green. For our perfect shade, we used a combination of approximately 4 drops of yellow and 2 drops of blue food coloring. Knead the color thoroughly into the dough until it’s uniformly green.
  • For the second portion, create a rich Christmas Red. We achieved this by mixing about 3 drops of crimson and 3 drops of red food coloring. Again, knead until the color is evenly distributed throughout the dough.
  • Leave the third portion of dough in its natural, beautiful buttery shade to represent white.

Remember to wear gloves if you want to avoid staining your hands with the food coloring!

Layering the Cookie Dough for a Beautiful Swirl

The layering process is key to achieving the stunning multi-colored spiral effect in your Christmas Butter Cookies.

Step 5: Form Even Rectangle Layers. On separate pieces of parchment paper, gently press each colored dough portion down into a rectangle. To ensure all layers are the same size and shape, a helpful trick is to draw an 8×6-inch rectangle on one side of a piece of parchment paper, then flip the paper over. Use this outline as a guide to press your dough down evenly with your fingers. You don’t necessarily need a rolling pin here; your fingers work perfectly to create flat, uniform layers. Repeat this process for all three colored cookie dough portions (red, white, and green).

Collage image showing the process of stacking colored cookie dough layers, slicing them in half lengthwise, doubling the stack, and finally wrapping the dough in plastic wrap for chilling.

Step 6: Stack and Double the Layers. Carefully transfer your flattened dough layers and stack them one on top of the other. We recommend layering them with the red dough on the bottom, the white in the middle, and the green dough on top. Once stacked, gently press them together to adhere. Then, using a sharp knife or bench scraper, slice the entire stacked block of dough in half lengthwise. Now, stack one half directly on top of the other. This creates six distinct layers (red, white, green, red, white, green) which will result in a more pronounced and beautiful swirl pattern in your finished cookies.

Step 7: Chill the Dough. Tightly wrap the layered cookie dough block in plastic wrap. Refrigerate it for at least one hour, or preferably longer (up to 2-3 hours), to allow the butter to firm up and the flavors to meld. Chilling is crucial for easy slicing and helps prevent the cookies from spreading excessively during baking, ensuring they hold their beautiful striped shape.

Step 8: Slice the Dough. Once thoroughly chilled, remove the dough from the refrigerator. Allow it to warm up slightly on the counter for approximately 10-15 minutes. This makes it easier to slice without cracking. Using a sharp knife, cut the dough into uniform slices, approximately 3/8-inch wide. Then, for perfect bite-sized cookies, cut each of these wider slices in half. This technique yields two delightful cookies from each original slice, maximizing your batch and creating lovely, manageable portions.

Baking Instructions for Perfectly Set Christmas Butter Cookies

With your beautifully layered dough prepared, it’s time to bake these festive cookies to golden perfection.

Step 9: Prepare for Baking and Add Sparkle. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper; this prevents sticking and ensures even baking. Carefully place the sliced cookie dough pieces onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving about an inch between each cookie. For an added touch of holiday magic, generously sprinkle the top of each cookie with sparkling sugar. While optional, the sparkling sugar not only provides a lovely visual shimmer but also adds a subtle textural crunch that truly elevates these festive treats.

Step 10: Bake and Cool. Bake the cookies in your preheated oven for 10-12 minutes. The exact baking time may vary slightly depending on your oven, so keep a close eye on them. You’re looking for the cookies to be set and firm to the touch, but they should not brown around the edges. Over-baking will result in dry, crumbly cookies, so err on the side of slightly under-baked for that classic tender butter cookie texture. Once baked, remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to cool completely on the baking sheet before transferring them to an airtight container for storage or serving. This allows them to firm up properly.

Butter Cookies are an enduring Christmastime classic, and with just a little food coloring, you can effortlessly take them to an entirely new level of festive charm. These yummy, beautifully colored butter cookies are not just a delight to eat but also a joy to behold. They are sure to look magnificent on your Christmas cookie platter, bringing smiles and holiday cheer to everyone who sees and tastes them!

Expert Tips and Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Food Coloring to use for vibrant Christmas colors?

For truly brilliant and rich colors without altering the dough consistency, we highly recommend using gel food coloring. Our go-to is Wilton Color Right Food Coloring because it’s incredibly concentrated, meaning you don’t need to use a lot to achieve vivid shades of red and green. For the red dough, we found a mix of crimson and red gel coloring delivered the perfect hue. For the green, a combination of yellow and blue gel coloring worked wonders. Remember to add small amounts at a time and knead thoroughly until you reach your desired intensity. We have an entire post dedicated to tips on how to achieve the brightest and best Christmas Colors for all your holiday baking projects; you can find it here.

How do I know when the cookies are done baking?

It’s crucial not to overbake these delicate butter cookies. Over-baked cookies can become dry, crumbly, and lose their signature melt-in-your-mouth texture. The key is to watch them closely, especially during the last few minutes of baking time. The cookies should appear set and feel firm to the touch when gently pressed. Crucially, they should not show significant browning around the edges. A very slight golden hue on the bottom is acceptable, but if they start turning visibly brown, they’ve likely baked too long. Aim for a pale, perfectly set cookie for the best results.

Can I freeze these Christmas Butter Cookies?

Absolutely! These butter cookies freeze wonderfully, making them perfect for preparing ahead of the busy holiday season. Once the cookies have cooled completely, store them in an airtight container with parchment paper layered between them to prevent sticking. For extended freshness, you can also wrap them tightly in two layers of aluminum foil before placing them in the airtight container. When properly stored, they will maintain their quality in the freezer for up to 3 months. To enjoy, simply thaw them at room temperature for a few hours before serving. They taste just as fresh as the day they were baked!

Why are my butter cookies spreading too much during baking?

If your cookies are spreading more than desired, there are a few common culprits. Firstly, ensure your butter was at the correct room temperature – too soft or melted butter can cause excessive spreading. Secondly, chilling the dough for the recommended time (at least one hour) is essential; this firms up the butter, which helps the cookies hold their shape. Finally, make sure your oven temperature is accurate. If your oven runs a little cool, cookies may spread more before setting. Using an oven thermometer can help verify accuracy.

How should I store these Christmas Butter Cookies for maximum freshness?

To keep your freshly baked butter cookies at their best, store them in an airtight container at room temperature. They will remain fresh and delicious for up to 5-7 days. For optimal texture and flavor, avoid direct sunlight or overly warm environments. Layering them gently with parchment paper helps prevent them from sticking together or getting crushed, preserving their beautiful appearance.
